Alliance With Terrorists Unlawful

By Ms Jyoti

The so-called alliance between the seven of Nepal's political parties and the Maoists has drawn a lot of flak, and rightly so. The alliance is not only unlawful but also unnatural. This dangerous equation has taken the country deeper into a crisis and only aggravated the problem.

It was the misrule of the political parties that made Nepal a breeding ground for the insurgents, and an important question is why they were unable to deal with the Maoist problem while they were in power? The alliance is viewed as a setback and has only served to aggravate the quagmire that the country is now steeped in.

This so-called equation is totally against the norms and spirit of the Constitution of 1990 which is regarded as one of the best in the world. This alliance does not serve the interests of the country and makes peace harder to achieve, which is the desire of the people. By their very nature, terrorists are constitutionally excluded and denied the state mechanism by all countries of the world.

Terrorists are not citizens of any country, and they have no legitimacy to make decisions as to what is good or bad for the country. By forging an alliance with the terrorists, the seven parities have shown their true colours and to what extent they are willing to go to gain power.

Thus, the unholy alliance with the terrorist Maoists is clearly against the laws of the Kingdom. Furthermore, the present crisis is an internal matter of the country, and it is not befitting for the diplomats of foreign countries to interfere in the affairs of a sovereign country as they have done in the present case. The diplomats are entrusted with the task of promoting friendly relations between countries and to which they have been assigned to serve in. Nepalese are capable of solving their internal problems, and the diplomats should realise this before being a party to domestic problems of this country. The government for its part is assessing the situation and has condemned the alliance, terming it as unnatural.

Clearly those involved in the alliance are looking only at their self-interests and not at the interests of the people whom they purport to serve. What must be realised is that any equation in the absence of the involvement of the state cannot be valid, and moreover, this cannot be effective.

The alliance has clearly violated the Constitution of the Kingdom and has no legitimacy under the prevailing law of the land.
