Crossfire War: Israel Accuses Syria - Iran of Causing Hezbollah Attack
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: JERUSALEM - "It is absolutely clear to us that Syria and the Iranians stand behind this Hezbollah opearation," was the quote from Israel's Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz. [JTA]
Damascus did not encourage it as a distraction from the UN investigation into Syria's supposed involvement in the assassination of Rafik Hariri. Rather it is Damascus-Tehran working together as a military axis to start the next war with Israel in which Syria may have been told this is their chance to retake the Golan Heights lost in the Six Day 1967 War that June.
In that war Israel knew she was about to be attacked and struck first, winning the war in less than a week. Tehran may hope Israel does so again so they can portray Israel as the aggressor, giving the Council of Guardians their chance to pose as defenders of Palestinian people by commiting Iran's brigade-size Rapid Deployment Force and prepare to celebrate their martyrdom.
