Crossfire War: Iran FM to Visit Cairo Friday
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: TEHRAN - In what could be a final overture to Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak to support the next major war with Israel, the Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa requested that Tehran's Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki visit Cairo on Friday. [IRNA]
It is significant that the request was not made by the Egyptian President who is aware that war with Israel will be popular in Egypt, and that could undermine his authority. I suspect that the Arab League Secretary informed Mubarak that the war is inevitable given the mood of Islamic people who want to see military support of the Palestinian cause.
Tehran's Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki is aware of the insignificance of Israel economically but he realizes the importance of it spiritually-emotionally and that the war will be another unifying event the Council of Guardians can use. Riyadh-Tehran will give those who want to destroy Israel a chance to experience martyrdom, something that Islam celebrates.
Tehran's foreign policy revolves around crisis creation so I suspect the Foreign Secretary will outline a series of incidents forcing Israel to respond with a massive retaliation against a number of terrorist bases even in Lebanon and Syria. That would enable Tehran and the Islamic world's media to portray Israel as the aggressor. It would provide Iran its excuse to deploy its Rapid Deployment Force-Brigade against Israel, which will probably be the extent of Tehran's commitment.
The missiles Iran has are meant for targets beyond the Middle East and that are an obstacle to Iran's attempt to lead the Islamic world into economic predominance.
