Crossfire War: Straw Visits Baghdad Unannounced - Britain to Withdraw
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: BAGHDAD - The reality of the trap has dawned on the British government. Their Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, as did his counterpart Condoleezza Rice, made an unannounced visit to Baghdad and met with the Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jafaari, and stated that Britain wanted to withdraw its troops speedily. [IRNA]
Straw stated that Britain will stay until Iraq's government is ready but that is an attempt to make the best statement possible under these deteriorating circumstances. The UN Security Council mandate for the occupation forces was extended for all of next year but a review will be made in June.
I suspect that before June the fighting in the Balkans, moving northward toward Vienna, could cause the review to happen before then.
