Exhibition Opening - Guido Albi Marini
November 10th Through December 23rd, 2005; Visual Alchemy: Recent Photography
Miami-based Guido Albi Marini left the world of
economics to greet his destiny as a self-taught photographer. His artistic
goal is achieved after careful composition, painterly digital enhancement
and insightful presentation. For this exhibition he has assembled works
from his My Mind is Fluid, Far From Noon, Mannequin and Solid Water Between
Us series. Throughout his artistic career, he has chosen to depopulate his
imagery, depicting objects, not humans, foregrounding an atmosphere of
isolation.

In his Mannequin series, the images were typically taken during his
frequent foreign travel, sometimes shot through display window glass in
stores. These statuesque ideals of beauty were selected for their faces
that reflect the "character" of the mannequin, rather than their bodies
that require movement to enliven them. The My Mind is Fluid series
represents his visual manifestations of meditation. The images of wooden
poles in water depict archetypal forms, phallic, some sheathed in metal,
others mirrored, mostly solitary and stolid, moored in shifting water
tinted blue or red by ambient light or color shifts.
In comparison are large images from his Solid Water Between Us series.
These images of seawater churning alongside a moving boat provoke
scientific and metaphorical readings of the three phases of water and the
concept of sublimation. In these instants, arrested by high shutter speeds,
one can sense the plasticity of water within. Far From Noon series, the
operative word is spontaneity. Taken on the beach around 5:30 a.m., the
work captures what Albi Marini felt were the most compelling images of the
moment. After composing the image in the viewfinder and taking the shot, he
enhanced the images in the digital darkroom, whitening the whites of the
walls of the cabin, enhancing the red lights from the ships in the
distance, lightening areas and darkening others, choreographing a digital
chiaroscuro, his sense of detachment paradoxically enhancing a personalized
perspective.
Guido Albi Marini's images are universal and timeless, less about the
specific object, and more about the enchantment of the everyday.
