Credit Valley Hospital Selects Boston WorkStation to Enable Automated Patient Self-Registration System
First Self-Registration Kiosks in Canada Save Time, Boost Patient Information Security
Boston Software Systems(TM), the leader in
workflow automation technology to the healthcare market, today announced
that The Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario (Canada) has
implemented Boston WorkStation(TM) (BWS) to enable its automated patient
registration process. Patients are able to check in at a kiosk in the
patient care area, which expedites the registration process for patients
who frequently visit -- at least three times per week over many months. The
Hospital recently opened five kiosks in its new regional cancer center.
Credit Valley will eventually install the kiosks in the outpatient and
ambulatory care clinics, where the hospital sees the greatest volume of
patients in a short period of time.
"Registration is the beginning of the healthcare process, so it is critical
to ensure patient information is correct. Our automated check-in system
provides more reliable patient information which is important in
maintaining the continuity of care," said Avril Cardoso, manager,
application services at The Credit Valley Hospital. "The Boston WorkStation
suite of software is one of the critical application components that allows
us to deliver automated patient registration to streamline workflow, and
ultimately to offer better service and maintain the highest standards for
patient data privacy. The Credit Valley Hospital continuously explores
every opportunity to deliver safer and higher quality service to our
patients."
"The Credit Valley Hospital prides itself on a strong and innovative IT
department," said Sara McNeil, president of Boston Software Systems. "With
a keen focus on quality, the IT staff applies productivity improvements
through technology to reduce clerical errors and deliver higher-quality
healthcare to its diverse customer base. This pays high dividends as both
administrators and clinicians can focus on provision of care and spend less
time with manual tasks that can be automated. Their self-registration
system comes at a critical juncture as the healthcare industry and
government are advocating for electronic medical records and the need to
invest in technology to enable process efficiencies."
How the Self-Registration Works
Without a keyboard, a patient can scan his/her health card at a kiosk. The
hospital system deploys a real-time
network-to-network connection with the Canadian Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care to ensure the patient's identity and validate the card. If
they are in sync, the system automatically signs the patient into the
MEDITECH Admissions Module and delivers paperwork to the registration desk.
If the card is not valid, the system displays a message instructing the
patient to see a registration clerk, who will assist him/her. The
transaction takes approximately 30 seconds. Credit Valley has achieved
proof-of-concept on this device through a unanimous affirmation by the key
stakeholders. With virtually little or no use of a keyboard, the hospital
has even considered how to control the potential spread of infections.
As a result of using Boston Software Systems' workflow automation and
scripting technology, The Credit Valley Hospital has greatly improved its
registration processes, saving time and money, increasing accuracy and
ultimately improving patient care. It will also become one of the first
hospitals in Canada to implement intelligent registration, which uses BWS
to guide a clerk through the whole information gathering process.
