Air Force supports Iraqi, Afghan and Coalition Objectives
SOUTHWEST ASIA — Coalition aircraft flew 42 close air support and armed reconnaissance sorties Oct. 10 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to Coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and Coalition ground forces operations to create a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.
United States Air Force F-15s performed air strikes in support of Coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces. The F-15s expended three GBU-38s against a group of buildings used by insurgents as firing positions in the vicinity of Karabilah with successful effects.
In addition, U.S. Air Force F-16s and a Predator and U.S. Navy F/A-18s and an EA-6 provided close air support to Coalition troops in the vicinities of Baghdad, Balad, Fallujah, Habbaniyah, Karamah and Salman Pak.
In addition, 12 U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Also, U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft performed in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.
In Afghanistan, Coalition aircraft flew 30 close air support and armed reconnaissance sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to Coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities, and the conduct of presence route patrols.
Sorties included U.S. Air Force A-10s and Royal Air Force GR-7s which provided close air support to Coalition troops in the vicinities of Asadabad, Khowst, and Qalat.
In addition, three U.S. Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.
United States Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Horn of Africa. More than 180 airlift sorties were flown, moving nearly 205 short tons of cargo, and approximately 3,600 passengers.
Coalition C-130 crews from Canada and the Republic of Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF.
On Oct. 9, U.S. Air Force and French Air Force tankers flew 34 sorties and offloaded more than 2.1 million pounds of fuel.
