Iraqis Apply to be Policemen, Ignore Terrorists
Despite Al Qaida attacks against Iraqi civilians and policemen, there is no shortage of police recruits. Attacks this week by the anti-government forces of "Al Qaida in Iraq" killed dozens of police officers injured many more.
According to the Azzaman newspaper website, "When the authorities in the southern city of Nasiriya announced the formation of a new 900-strong police contingent, they were swamped with 27,000 applications."
Nasiriya, the capital of Dhiqar province, is home to nearly half a million people.
The governor of Dhiqar, Aziz Alwan said "This is an indication that unemployment has reached worrying levels in the province."
The governor said nearly half of his province’s 1.5 million inhabitants capable of work are now without jobs.
