Manual Epidermal Dermabrasion: A Gentle Hand Mightier Than the Machine

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 14, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- In an era of high tech procedures and overbooked dermatologists, Forever Young's David Rahimi, M.D. is one of the first practitioners to take his well-trained hand and artistic eye and turn to some old fashioned methods to get flawless results for problem skin.

Dr. Rahimi relies on a unique type of peel, Manual Epidermal Dermabrasion (MED), to customize treatment for a host of skin concerns-ranging from age spots and acne scars to fine wrinkles and flaking skin. Unlike lasers and chemical peels, which can be twice as expensive, MED can be applied to specific trouble spots without irritating healthy surrounding tissue and it affords the practitioner unmatched control in the number of layers to peel away. Also, MED patients can see immediate results, something laser and chemical peel patients need weeks and months to realize.

"I've successfully performed this procedure on twelve-year-old girls with acne and a 103-year-old woman for scarring and lines," says Dr. Rahimi. "It's personalized for each patient's skin and ideally done in a series to get lasting results."

MEDs are performed by scraping the skin with a surgical blade. "With the slightest pressure I can penetrate the blade deep into skin and remove imperfections, fine lines, keratisis and impacted pores," says Dr.Rahimi. "It may sound medieval but in reality, it's a very gentle procedure and patients may return to work immediately."

After the dermabrasion, the skin is treated with an application of carbon dioxide slush that bubbles on the skin, tightening the pores and promoting new collagen synthesis. The result of this procedure, which takes around 30 minutes, is to make the face appear more youthful with a deep clarity. Fine lines, wrinkles, traces of acne and pigmentation are diminished. The color of the skin is fresher and more luminous.

MED is best suited for patients who find that lasers, light sources, and radio-frequency devices might be too taxing on the skin and who cannot afford to wait weeks to months to see results.

Founded in 1999, Forever Young is a cosmetic practice, providing patients with discrete, personalized care at reasonable costs. Specializing in the Tuliplift, an improvement on mini facelifts, liposuction and cutting edge procedures like Thermage, Forever Young has also set out to offer care that stressed close doctor-patient collaboration with a holistic approach to care.
