Crossfire War: Balkans - Kosovo Serb Policeman Wounded in Ambush
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: PRISTINA - A wounded Serb policeman in Kosovo was taken to Bondsteel, a U. S. military base near the site of an ambush by unknown gunmen.
U. N. police quoted by Reuters said, "The incident occurred when the officer’s vehicle… was ambushed and fired upon by unknown armed suspects." The attack was just before midnight on the road near the Serp region of Strpce in southern Kosovo. The province is under the administration of the U. N.
On Thursday a nearby memorial to ethnic Albanian guerrillas killed in the 1998-99 war with Serb forces was damaged in an explosion. The explosion could have been Serb retaliation for an attack on August 28 when two Serb men were killed most likely by Albanian extremists who want Kosovo to become independent.
Negotiations are to begin on Kosovo's future status, possibly next month, but violence could spiral out of control before then. Events could easily overtake the international agencies and NATO who are monitoring and mandated to control the area.
