OR-Live.com Presents: Cesarean Childbirth -- See the Delivery of a Baby Through a Surgical Incision in Live Webcast From Hartford Hospital
Live Webcast: September 23rd, 12:00 Noon EDT (16:00 UTC)
Birth by Cesarean Section may occur for a
variety of reasons, including a large baby, placenta previa, prior Cesarean
Section or a breech presentation. The process of childbirth remains an
amazing miracle when accomplished through this surgical procedure. Watch
Hartford Hospital physicians bring a new life into the world in this live
webcast September 23rd at 12:00 Noon (16:00 UTC).

At least 22% of women in the U.S. give birth by Cesarean Section. About 1.2
million surgeries are performed each year, making it the most common
procedure in the U.S. (www.medlineplus.gov). Often doctors don't decide to
perform a C-section until labor has begun. And for some couples who have
gone through natural birthing classes, the thought of a C-section can be
unnerving. Doctors at Hartford Hospital hope to dispel some of the concerns
about cesareans with its live webcast.
The 60-minute webcast not only will include the live child birth, the
techniques for opening and closing of the womb, but will also highlight the
hospital's birthing suites and examine its "Baby-Friendly" status, a
recognition by the World Health Organization bestowed on only about 40
hospitals nationwide.
Lawrence Z. Lazor, M.D. will perform the procedure. John F. Greene, M.D.
will moderate the event.
The surgeons will also demonstrate the technique for skin closure as
advances now make it possible to reduce the scars' visibility. "We want to
show the procedure from the first incision to the last stitch so patients
can get a clear sense of the effort we make to eliminate scarring," said
Dr. Greene, Assistant Director of Women's Health Services at Hartford
Hospital.
Immediately after delivery, nurses work to make sure mother and baby stay
together as often as possible. In obtaining baby-friendly status, Hartford
Hospital demonstrated its ability to offer breastfeeding mothers the
information, skills and support needed to successfully initiate and
continue breastfeeding their babies.
