Crossfire War: South Asia; Hindus Join Kashmir Independence Movement

By Willard Payne

Night Watch: KASHMIR - In a shocking new development Hindus in Kashmir are joining the Muslim dominated independence movement.

Their committment was revealed when Indian soldiers gunned down 18-year-old Hindu Kuldeep Singh along with seven Muslim militants in Kashmir’s border district Doda in 2003. New Delhi tried to describe him as an unwilling conscript force to fight by Islamic militants.

But last month another Hindu was killed and two others arrested. The Hindu who was killed was actually a sector commander of the Hizbul rebel group, one of the largest Islamic groups in the area whose objective is to incorporate the whole of Kashmir into Pakistan.

An Indian Border Security Force battalion commander, Suresh Yadav, offered this explanation, "Mostly because of militancy in the border region of Kashmir in the last 16 years, economic growth has been stunted. Hindu boys from poverty-stricken families in the border districts have joined the Islamic rebel groups who offer good pay packages to them while they fight, and also to their families in case of their deaths."

Since the uprising began in November 1989 more than 125,000 Kashmiris have migrated out of the valley. 75% are Hindus and Sikhs. Hindus are 28% of Kashmir’s 10.5 million population.

Pakistan is currently planning to celebrate the 40th year anniversary of its second war with India that began September 6, 1965. The first war after Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s warning to India in 1964, just before his death, on the dangers of Hindu extremism. He knew those were the beliefs that motivated most of India’s government and the diseased spirituality teaches the hatred of anyone not Hindu.

At the time of the warning India possessed a decisive military advantage over Pakistan so they ignored the warning. The Khomeini revolution of 1979 has shifted the balance in Pakistan’s favor. The spread of Khomeini’s belief that Islam should again unite against its enemies is the reason Saudi Arabia, as this site mentioned at the time, conducted ground forces manuevers with Pakistan in Pakistan last December.

Tehran is also poised and prepared to offer more than just moral support.
