Crossfire War: Central Asia; Pentagon Denies Planning Base Near City of Mary
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: ASHGABAT - Military officials are denying reports that the Pentagon explored the possibility of establishing a base in southern Turkmenistan near the city of Mary.
Media outlets in Russia reported on August 30 that Ashgabat may have agreed to allow the U. S. to establish a base near the southern city of Mary, which is still off limits due to reasons that are still a mystery. This site mentioned recently disputed reports of an uprising caused by Islamic militants that crossed from Afghanistan.
Russian Air Force Maj. General Nikolai Bezborodov, interviewed by Interfax-AVN, said that the Mary facility is "one of the best military airfields in the post-Soviet space, located in the direct vicinity of Afghanistan’s northern provinces."
