Execs Turn Out in Force for TELEHOUSE's Summer Seminars as Content Delivery Theme Garners Strong Interest
Time Warner Cable, Limelight Networks and Cogent Communications Serve as Co-hosts
TELEHOUSE America's BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY July
and August seminar attendance shows the series' growing popularity.
Attendees filled Time Warner Cable's meeting room in July to hear Time
Warner Cable (NYSE: TWX) and Limelight Networks discuss content delivery's
trends and the changing distribution paradigm within media and
entertainment. Back at 25 Broadway in August, a full room heard Cogent
Communications Group, Inc. (AMEX: COI) take up the content delivery theme
with a discussion of carriers' efforts within the small-medium business
segment.
Bhupender Kaul, Vice President, Time Warner Cable Business Services, spoke
of the issues facing today's large content provider technologically and
economically. The substantial demand for analog content and migrating users
to digital, plus the call for VOD, HD, HD-VOD, interactive TV, gaming,
voice, and high speed data products, coupled with their potential to alter
the marketplace's content landscape, were other issues Kaul touched on. The
audience also learned of TWC's substantial capital investment to upgrade
their system and their ongoing efforts in that area, resulting in even
better capability to deliver products over the upper bandwidth spectrums.
During the talk given by Limelight's Michael Gordon, Co-founder and Vice
President of Strategy and Corporate Development, Gordon focused on the
direction of Internet technology and the increasing significance of the
'user experience.' Additionally, the audience heard about the quality
expected by different demographics and the industry's developments to
deliver it. Gordon's description of the solutions offered in broadband home
content delivery led to his commenting, "The Internet has reached a point
where high quality broadband media delivery and playback is a viable option
for content providers from both a technical as well as a business
standpoint."
Cogent's Jim Bubeck, Vice President of On-Net Sales, addressed increasing
business in the SMB segment, what kind of demands they place on a network,
and how different carriers can cope with those demands as SMBs increase
their bandwidth needs. To illuminate these points, he commented on setting
up an extensive network, building in technical efficiencies upfront to
enable a balance of good ROI, high service levels and easy scalability. He
illustrated how the network works, technical developments already improving
latency and bandwidth capability nationally and abroad, and the best
pricing approaches for different business tiers. Bubeck commented,
"Building our network from scratch enabled Cogent to have the capacity
necessary to provide dedicated bandwidth to each customer without
oversubscription. This along with the advanced optical equipment that
Cogent installed enables us to quickly react to the changing market and
maintain our ROI."
Since TELEHOUSE launched its monthly seminar series, executives have
reacted positively to their having a forum addressing topical industry
issues in an informal, non-sales pitch environment. The co-hosts' talks
consistently generate out-of-the-box thinking and enlightened discussions
of issues and new approaches that presents a genuine value-add.
