Textile Trade Negotiations Resume Between China, U.S.
By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze
Resuming talks on a comprehensive agreement on textile trade, U.S. and Chinese negotiators met in Beijing, August 30.
U.S. Trade Representative Office textile negotiators met with Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, following on from a mid August meeting in San Francisco.
David Spooner, the lead negotiator, heads an interagency team including representatives from the U.S. Commerce, State, Labor and the Treasury departments.
U.S. textile and apparel manufacturers are pushing for a broad-based agreement because they view the current efforts as piecemeal and ineffective.
At the same time, retailers and importers are worried that overly protective agreements could lead to shortages and price increases.
