Queen's University Entrepreneur Announces Online Used-book Marketplace To Help Students Save Money On Textbooks
Young entrepreneurs from Kingston, Ontario experiencing exponential growth and exposure with the newly-launched SmartandBroke.com used-textbook exchange
TORONTO (EWORLDWIRE) Aug 29, 2005
Yale Fox, a third-year student at Queen's University, has developed an internet hub for cash-strapped students to save significant amounts of money. The site offers a forum from which to buy and sell used textbooks for a fraction of what they would cost new, or used, at a traditional campus bookstore.
During Fox's second year attending university in Kingston, he saw a long-standing student issue sweep directly into his focus - students in serious need of money. Consequently, Fox discovered that there was a burgeoning niche for selling used textbooks to fellow students for much-needed cash. In turn, those same students could use that newly earned money to purchase their own textbooks for upcoming courses. Fox, 20, says, "What this site offers is a vast forum for trading, buying and selling textbooks that provides students across the country with an affordable and reliable source of educational material. And as the site continues to grow, so will the volume of available material."
While the site and its developers are based out of Kingston, SmartandBroke.com will service university centres across the country, further extending its reach at the national level.
Started in late 2004 by a wide-eyed Queen's University student, Smart & Broke has become a huge buzz, in large part to Fox's unwavering commitment to the concept. Fox's commitment and strong business sense, along with Matt McWhirter's tireless assistance, are the cornerstones of the business' early success. The ultimate goal for the business is to expand to regional centres across the country and eventually to college towns and cities across North America. The long-term vision for the business is to provide a highly developed, real-time, and flexible forum for not only textbook-distribution, but also a wide range of educational materials that students need every day.
Smart & Broke aims to continually update and improve the various services it offers in order to ensure long-term viability and to make it an infinitely useful and deep pool of educational material. McWhirter adds, "Our original goal is the ultimate one - that is, to help students who have an extremely limited disposal income get the materials they need to excel at whatever post-secondary institution they attend."
