Women's Equity Day commemorates amendment giving women right to vote
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified on August 26, 1920, guaranteed American women the right to vote.
In honoring Women's Equity Day, the nation continues to work with those bringing education, skills, and human rights to women worldwide.
This year, U.S.-sponsored programs trained women from Kosovo in leadership and technical skills, established a women's leadership institute in Iraq, trained women to be political candidates in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and advocated and provided for greater protection of Darfurian women and girls in Sudan.
Programs seek to expand support for girls' education and increase assistance to address the disproportionate number of women affected by HIV/AIDS.
Women's accomplishments in education, business, science, art, medicine, and athletics have strengthened civil society. Today, we celebrate the many improvements women make in communities and workplaces across our great nation, and around the globe.
