High School Senior Develops Local Charitable Initiative KidsCompute Aimed at Increasing Accessibility to Technology
Shiloh Tabernacle, United Holy Church of America Will Host the First KidsCompute Center
Rather then spending his summer like most
high school students, senior Joey Crivello opted to spend part of his
summer developing a new organization, KidsCompute. This local charitable
initative group aims to provide disadvantaged youth across the United
States access to computers and computer training all year long. Today,
KidsCompute unveiled its first computer lab at Shiloh Tabernacle, United
Holy Church of America.
KidsCompute believes that disadvantaged youth deserve accessible, fast,
modern computers so they can develop computer skills after school. Using
old machines is often counterproductive; they were discarded and donated
for a reason, why would you train someone on depreciated equipment? At the
Shiloh Tabernacle lab KidsCompute deploys 12 modern computers developed and
built specifically for the lab. KidsCompute additionally installed a full
network complete with broadband Internet access.
"KidsCompute was developed to provide young people the much-needed computer
skills it takes to be successful in today's society," Crivello said. "Our
KidsCompute Center in Milwaukee will give local youth free computer and
Internet access throughout the year, and also establish a regular schedule
of computer and Internet skill classes that will be open for all those
interested."
In addition to developing computer skills, KidsCompute sees providing free
computer access as an opportunity to give children a constructive
alternative to occupy their time and keep them safe from harmful
influences.
"We also look forward to facilitating donations of KidsCompute computers to
minors in Milwaukee," Crivello said. "Our application process identifies
individuals deserving donations. The computers are then delivered and
preloaded with software and instructions for setup. KidsCompute also
provides repair service for broken computers."
