Crossfire War: Caucasus; Unknown Aircraft Penetrates Georgian Airspace
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: TBILISI/MOSCOW - The head of Russia’s Air Forces’ press service, Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky, quoted by RIA Novosti, denied that a Russian aircraft penetrated Georgian air space. "Neither yesterday nor today did Russian aircraft fly near the Russian-Georgian border."
The Georgian Defense Ministry had stated the plane headed to the Kondori Gorge from adjacent Russian territory and circled over the Kvabchara village for half an hour.
Circling for half an hour indicates a reconnaissance flight. For years Moscow has stated that Islamic militants have been using Georgian territory, that borders Chechnya, as a base to launch attacks against Russia. The Kondori Gorge could be one of those areas and during this year Moscow has stated publicly that it is preparing to strike terrorist bases wherever they are.
