IAEA Supervision of Iranian Nuclear Activities Continues
By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze
Iran’s resumption of its nuclear conversion program is a concern, but National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley welcomes continued international supervision of its nuclear activities, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s indication of further negotiations.
Hadley, speaking at a press briefing, said that while Iran has taken steps to begin uranium conversion, which the international community sees as a violation of the November 2004 Paris Accord, it has "not done anything on reprocessing or enrichment."
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s [IAEA] Board of Governors adopted a resolution August 11 calling upon Iran to come back into compliance with the Paris Accord that was negotiated with France, Germany and the United Kingdom, known as the EU3, and to suspend any further conversion activity, calling it "a matter of great seriousness," Hadley said.
The IAEA Director General is to make a report on the 3rd of September. Iran has the opportunity to come back into compliance, stop the conversion activity, and resume discussions and negotiations with the EU3 about a more permanent arrangement.
Hadley said "We think that is the right step, to have -- for Iran to come back into compliance with the Paris Accord, and to resume the negotiations and discussions with the EU3,", adding that in public fora such as the IAEA, "we have, I think, good communication with the Iranians on that issue."
