LinuxWorld 2005: World's First Integrated Digital Video Surveillance and Real-Time Data Recovery System for Linux Offered by BroadWare and BakBone
Homeland Defense Applications, Commercial and Government Surveillance Systems Operate Faster and More Efficiently With Converging Video Surveillance and Storage Technologies

LinuxWorld -- BroadWare Technologies,
Inc., the leader in distributed video surveillance, has teamed with BakBone
Software (TSX: BKB) (OTC: BKBO), a global provider of data protection
software, to deliver the first integrated video surveillance and data
recovery system for expediting real-time recovery of digital security
camera streaming video. Built on Linux, this unique surveillance and
storage solution drives the availability of powerful yet economical video
surveillance technologies over IP networks.

Following the recent bombings in London and elevated security concerns on
U.S. domestic public transit systems, pressure is building to address the
critical need to capture, distribute, store and recover real-time video
surveillance data. Traditional surveillance systems have been limited to
closed-circuit television monitoring, manual security and proprietary VCR-
and DVR-based solutions. BroadWare and BakBone have combined IP-based video
surveillance, commodity architecture and networked storage technologies to
enable widespread adoption of cost-effective, scalable video surveillance
capabilities based on open standards.
"As organizations assign more critical tasks to Linux for cost and
performance benefits, industry leaders are joining forces to deliver open
source-based, business-critical applications such as this hybrid solution,
which is accelerating mainstream adoption of Linux," explained Arun Taneja,
founder and consulting analyst of The Taneja Group. "BakBone and BroadWare
have collaborated to build a best-of-class, Linux-based storage and video
surveillance system that enables companies to respond more effectively,
investigate more thoroughly and recover more rapidly from security threats
and events."
This integrated video surveillance and data recovery system blends the
BroadWare Media Platform (BMP) with BakBone's NetVault Virtual Disk Library
(VDL) backup software for rapid, disk-based recovery of archived video
surveillance footage. The ability to conduct near-instantaneous data
restores is a dramatic improvement over the lengthy time lags associated
with sequential tape access and recovery.
"BroadWare and BakBone are offering our mutual customers fully integrated
systems that combine off-the-shelf video surveillance and storage
components with affordable, open commodity hardware to streamline
deployment," said Matt Graham, vice president of professional services for
BroadWare Technologies. "This offers integrators and security-conscious
commercial, government and military organizations the ability to easily
integrate their choice of technologies in designing complete surveillance
systems that evolve and scale as new technologies are introduced."
Many modes of public transportation, including airports, rail, subway
systems, buses, ports, road and transit authorities have been slow to
employ digital video surveillance systems because of price and complexity.
Transportation is one of many industries with a critical need for
integrated security and data recovery.
"IP-based digital video surveillance integrated with highly scalable and
cost-effective storage solutions with robust disk-based backup will ease
some of the challenges of security breaches and threats throughout the
transportation industry," said Robert Kusche, eServer Solutions Architect
for rs-unix. "The combination of rs-unix's IBM and open systems expertise
and best-in-class technology from BakBone and BroadWare allows us to offer
one fully integrated solution that leverages traditionally separate areas
of technology expertise."
The combined BroadWare/ Bakbone solution accelerates access to data and
enables companies to consolidate multiple video feeds onto one recording
device while seamlessly scaling to provision new servers on the network and
manage tens to thousands of cameras.
"As the standard for Linux data protection, BakBone is proud to partner
with BroadWare, well known for its commitment to open-systems development,
in bringing this useful, cost-effective and wide-ranging application to
market," said Mark Milford, senior vice president of worldwide sales for
BakBone Software. "BakBone's ability to speed the recovery of data using
advanced disk-based backup technology that allows point-in-time access to
video images can mean the difference between identifying whether a threat
is real or not, and in real-time containing or responding to that threat."
Pricing and Availability
The Integrated Video Surveillance and Data Recovery system is available
immediately from rs-unix, a joint BakBone-BroadWare channel partner.
Solutions from rs-unix include IBM xSeries x346 server with
BroadWare 4-camera setup and Media Platform and BakBone NetVault WorkGroup
Server for Linux. Pricing for the entry-level solution starts at $22,000.

LinuxWorld Demonstration
Ongoing demonstrations of this hybrid solution take place at LinuxWorld
(August 9-11) at the BakBone booth (no. 231) and IBM/rs-unix booth (no.
610). Demonstrations showcase the BroadWare Media Platform running
BakBone's NetVault Client installed on an IBM xSeries platform. Streaming
video with real-time recovery are being demonstrated on an IBM system
backed up to a NetVault server running IBM OpenPower with Red Hat
Enterprise Linux using NetVault Virtual Disk Library (VDL) software to
achieve disk-based data protection.
