Crossfire War:NW Africa- New Government Pressured to Sever Relations with Israel
By Willard Payne
Night Watch: NOUAKCHOTT - In the first of many pressures the new government will encounter, opposition politicians are calling on coup leaders to sever relations with Israel.
"Mauritanians don’t want diplomatic relations with Israel," said Messaoud Ould Boulkheir, quoted by Reuters. He is president of the Popular Progressive Alliance, one of the larger opposition parties. "In fact we should break them off."
Another opposition leader, Mohamed Ould Maouloud, president of the Union of Progressive Forces said, "Our party has always wanted to break off diplomatic relations with Israel, and to only normalize relations if there is a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians."
In May when Israel’s Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom visited, students threw stones and burned tires. The new government has to decide what is more important. Popularity at home if it ends relations with Israel or support from the U.S.
Since Washington did not bring the new government into power then popularity will take precedence. Whatever aid Washington had been sending can easily be more than matched by Tehran and other Islamic capitals. As of this writing the new government has made no foreign policy announcement. Look for a round of visits from Islamic countries, this month before they do.
The new government is about to embrace the Islamic world and its agenda.
