Lawrence Stricker Named President-Elect of APA's Division 5
Lawrence Stricker, Senior Associate in ETS's
Research & Development Division, has been named president-elect of Division
5 of the American Psychological Association.
Located in Washington, DC, APA is the largest scientific and professional
organization representing psychology in the United States and is the
world's largest association of psychologists. APA's current membership
includes more than 150,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants
and students. Through its divisions in 53 subfields of psychology and
affiliations with 60 state, territorial and Canadian provincial
associations, APA works to advance psychology as a science, as a profession
and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare.
Stricker will become president-elect of APA's Division 5 -- Evaluation,
Measurement, and Statistics at the APA's annual convention in New Orleans,
August 10-13, 2005, and president of the APA division the following year.
In the role, he says that he will focus more closely on the practical
application of psychological assessment.
"My goal during my tenure will be to improve understanding of psychological
tests and to advance their appropriate use," Stricker says. "The APA is
uniquely situated to reach out to the public and to test professionals,
agencies and other assessment users and provide them with information and
guidance that will make psychological tests better understood and better
used."
Stricker, who received a Ph.D. in social psychology from New York
University, has been with ETS for 35 years. Stricker's body of research
includes assessing the relationship between examinee background
characteristics and performance on the GRE General Test, studying the
appropriateness of social class measures for White and Black students,
assessing the construct validity of ETS's major testing programs,
developing an index of differential item functioning, devising noncognitive
measures for use in school admissions, and appraising the functioning of
personality inventories. Stricker currently is also an advisory editor of
the Journal of Educational Measurement, a publication of the National
Council on Measurement in Education.
"There are few more deserving of this honor than Larry," says Ida Lawrence,
Senior Vice President of ETS Research & Development. "Larry's keen
scholarship has benefited ETS since he began his association with our
organization in 1960. This election is an acknowledgment of his many
contributions to the field of educational measurement."
