Miss Michigan 2005 Comes to Marygrove July 31 for Homecoming Reception

DETROIT, July 29, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Detroit and Marygrove College welcome Octavia Reese, Miss Michigan 2005, home on Sunday, July 31, after receiving her crown June 19 in Muskegon. Octavia was raised in the West McNichols/Wyoming neighborhood surrounding Marygrove and returns to her roots to celebrate her victory. Neighbors, friends and the community are welcome to meet Miss Michigan in Marygrove's Madame Cadillac Building from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Marygrove is located at 8425 West McNichols Road at Wyoming in northwest Detroit.

Twenty-two year old Octavia is a May 2005 graduate of Hope College, with a major in classical studies and French, and a minor in music. The platform on which she competed was Building Bridges through International Communication. She is a classical cellist. Octavia is well on her way to her ambition to obtain a doctorate of comparative philology and linguistics, and ultimately work as a diplomat in the United Nations. After her reign as Miss Michigan, Octavia will teach English in France for three years.

The Miss Michigan Scholarship Program is a not-for-profit corporation that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering Michigan women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence.

As a young child, Octavia attended Marygrove College's Kids' College programs, including music lessons and dance classes. Kids' College, which has been in existence for more than 20 years, offers:



 -- Pre-kindergarten through high school remedial courses;
 -- ACT preparation;
 -- Enrichment courses in music, dance, crafts;
 -- Approved for NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND tutorial services.

Marygrove has private music lessons and dance classes for children five years and older through its Institute of Music and Dance, a year-round school of the arts offering high-quality programming in music, dance, theater and art to children as well as adults at all proficiency levels.
