Little book saves taxpayers millions
NEW YORK, NY - July, 2005 - A report from the National Commission on Writing, released on July 5, 2005 (see sources at end of release), estimates that $221 million a year of taxpayer money is spent teaching state government employees remedial writing because its being taught badly in the public schools. Educator/author Judi Kesselman-Turkel points out that instead of sending workers to $400 per employee remedial classes, they can quickly and easily learn to write well.
"Any good paper, like any good car or house, is made from a plan," says Kesselman-Turkel. "Long ago, the schools stopped teaching how to plan before you write. The best professional writers know that writing is 80% knowing what you want to say and organizing how to say it precisely, concisely and in a sentence sequence that your reader will be able to follow. If people are taught to plan before they write, they'll write much faster and with clarity."
Kesselman-Turkel's $6.95 book, "Secrets to Writing Great Papers", coauthored with Franklynn Peterson, has been showing students from junior high through adult learners how to plan and write clear, well-written reports since 1983. Recently republished in the University of Wisconsin Press's "Study Smart" Series, in 78 pages, it teaches how to state the case and organize words so that others will understand what the writer is trying to say. While dealing mainly with report writing, the book's skills also apply to email and letter writing.
Academic Advisor Shannon L. Young of Carnegie Mellon University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences said in the Journal of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) that, "If students follow this [the book's] process, they are guaranteed to produce better quality papers. It will help readers develop their writing skills to meet the demands of work."
Kesselman-Turkel will be happy to explain the secrets to writing great papers for any audience. She has spoken on educational topics on national television and radio. Other books in the "Study Smart" Series are "Test-Taking Strategies", "Study Smarts", "Research Shortcuts", "Grammar Crammer", "Spelling Simplified", "Note-Taking Made Easy" and "Vocabulary Builder".
