PHOTOS: No More Prison Time For Sandy Murphy
LAS VEGAS (EWORLDWIRE) Apr 29, 2005
A jubilant Sandy Murphy emerged from the Nevada Woman's Correctional facility at 10:30 a.m. flanked by her legal team and assured of never having to spend another minute in custody for allegations arising from the death of casino heir Ted Binion. Ms. Murphy had been acquitted in November, 2004 of murder charges but was convicted of theft counts related to Mr. Binion's multi-million dollar cache of silver found in Pahrump, Nevada. Those counts are currently on appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court.
As the gates to the prison door opened Ms. Murphy greeted reporters exclaiming her relief and stating, "Michael Cristalli, Marc Saggese, and Gary Modafferi are the best criminal defense attorneys in Las Vegas." The Nevada Department of Prisons had agreed with defense arguments that Ms. Murphy be processed and immediately released effectively ending a seven year legal odyssey that began in September, 1998 with the drug overdose death of Ted Binion. Ms Murphy had spent four and one half years in custody before acquittal last November of murder allegations.
Earlier in the week, the court rejected defense attempts to have a quarter million dollar bail exonerated. The court dismissed defense arguments that more prison time for Ms. Murphy was not possible. The court suggested the defense present Ms. Murphy to the Department of Corrections to "test" its theory regarding further incarceration. This morning, one half hour after walking into the facility, Ms. Murphy appeared with permanent discharge papers.
