Hour Detroit Salutes Area 'Ristorante' of the Year -- Bacco Ristorante

Hour Detroit magazine has chosen Bacco
Ristorante as its 2005 Restaurant of the Year. The announcement was made
today by George Bulanda, managing editor of Hour Detroit.
Bacco Ristorante is an exemplar of the qualities that define the top
restaurant in the area: quality and preparation of food, adherence to
technique, originality in presentation, service, dining room comfort,
decor, as well as the intangibles that contribute to ambience and the
overall dining experience.
Specializing in top-end Italian cuisine, owners Luciano Del Signore and his
wife, Monica, opened Bacco Ristorante's doors in 2002 to rave reviews from
local and national media and diners alike. Restaurant Manager Matthew A.
Bricker supervises the day-to-day restaurant activities; while Del Signore
oversees the daily presentation of authentic Italian dishes he creates
himself. Del Signore is a largely self-taught chef whose experience comes
from strong family influence. He has worked in family restaurants since
childhood and uses the knowledge gained there to create some of the area's
most delicious dishes.
"Every once in a while you run across an artist who is basically
self-taught," says Christopher Cook, chief restaurant critic for Hour
Detroit. "Grandma Moses, for example. Or, Thomas Keller, the chef-owner of
the French Laundry in Napa, although he apprenticed at several great French
restaurants. Luciano Del Signore is one of those rarities."
Cook explains: "With virtually no formal training, he has reached the level
that only great chefs attain, a place where his sense of nuance, delicacy,
intricacy is a signature on every dish that goes to the table. That's what
marks great artists, whether they are painters, musicians or chefs."
