eyefortransport's Outsourcing Logistics Survey dispels a few 3PL myths

(Chicago, IL. 2nd February 2005) With manufacturers and retailers increasingly realising the benefits of outsourcing to 3PL providers, eyefortransport wanted to determine just what is holding shippers back when it comes to outsourcing more of their logistics operations.

Conducted from December 2004 to January 2005, eyefortransport's Outsourcing Logistics Survey drew responses from over a hundred logistics professionals from manufacturing and retail companies.

Despite obvious pay-offs like more favourable rates and increased overall supply chain efficiency, the decision to outsource is still inhibited by a perceived loss of ownership. Although 79% of the respondents currently use 3PL services, the survey reveals that shippers rarely outsource 100% of their logistics operations.

The survey suggests that while 3PL customers are generally happy with the level of service they're getting (81%) and the majority are keen to outsource more of their logistics activities to 3PLs in the near future (75%), there are still some reservations.

The survey also dispels the notion that improving overall supply chain management systems and allowing shippers to concentrate on their core businesses are the key drivers for contracting a 3PL provider. The top priority is reducing logistics costs, with 31% of the respondents rating this 'relevant' or 'very important'.
