Webcast Is Fifth Installment in a Series of Online Broadcasts Designed to Educate Physicians About Innovative Surgical Treatments and Techniques

Surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital, the largest teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, will demonstrate to an Internet audience a surgical procedure to treat liver cancer. The webcast will take place on February 3 at 4:30 P.M. EST and can be accessed by going to www.OR-Live.com

The operation, known as liver resection, is performed on select patients with either primary or secondary (metastatic) liver cancers. This operation will be performed by Dr. Kenneth Tanabe, MD, Chief of Surgical Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Deputy Clinical Director of the MGH Cancer Center, and Associate Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School; and Dr. James Cusack, MD, of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sam Yoon, MD, of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Mass General will participate during the broadcast and serve as narrator, describing the procedure and answering e-mail questions from viewers.

The scheduled procedure is exploratory laparotomy with intraoperative ultrasound examination of the liver and right hepatectomy. The patient has a history of colon cancer, having had previously undergone a three-stage sigmoid colectomy in 1995 when she presented with an obstructing sigmoid colon carcinoma. The patient now has a solitary metastases in the right lobe of the liver. "This patient has a very realistic chance for cure of their cancer with this operation," states Dr. Tanabe.

Camera crews will staff this broadcast with complete access to the operating theater. For more information about the broadcast, call 800-388-4644.

Massachusetts General Hospital, established in 1811, is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
