Playful Poems with Purpose -- Collection of Verse Makes Entertaining, Educational Tool

WASHINGTON, Utah, Jan. 12, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Adele Tolley Wilson uses vivid imagery and colorful language to fuel children's imaginations and make learning fun in Plum Gum and Other Chunk Poems: Teacher tested kid approved poems for building fluency through phonics (now available through AuthorHouse).

"Open the book to any page ... and step into a child's world of poetry," writes Wilson. "Characters such as Jake the Snake, Purple Ape and Poor Old Joan come alive as you read about them. The poems are sometimes witty, sometimes tender and always fun."

Plum Gum and Other Chunk Poems contains 101 clever rhymes, each one designed to teach beginning readers important phonic chunks and word families. Arranged alphabetically according to the phonetic lesson of focus, the book makes it easy for teachers to spice up classroom while engaging developing minds. Wilson's vibrant use of language sparks the imagination and delightful illustrations add to the enjoyment.

"Don't Count Sheep" illustrates how Wilson's sense of humor creates a lively learning experience:

I laid down and tried to sleep./ I tossed and turned, so I counted sheep./ The sheep were driving a new red jeep./ They picked up some chickens, peep, peep, peep./ The jeep got stuck when the mud got deep./ The horn kept honking, beep, beep, beep./ It got so loud I couldn't sleep./ Next time I won't count those sheep.

Perfect for the school library, the classroom or the bookshelf at home, Plum Gum and Other Chunk Poems starts children on their way to discovering the joys of reading.

Wilson first realized the power of words as a freshman in college when she wrote a song to introduce the girls in her dorm. A graduate of Brigham Young University, she taught elementary school for 25 years. This forum provided numerous opportunities to craft scripts, songs, stories and poems for children of all ages. Plum Gum and Other Chunk Poems is currently being used in classrooms throughout Utah. Born in Whitefish, Mont., Wilson was raised in Provo, Utah and Grand Junction, Colo. She is the mother of four children and lives with her husband in Washington, Utah.
