Utah Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan Accepts Award From PanCAN on Behalf of Wife Bobbye

In a videotaped acceptance speech aired
during the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's (PanCAN) "An Evening With the
Stars" on Nov. 13th, NBA Basketball Coach Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz
accepted the Emily Couric Public Service Award on behalf of his wife,
Bobbye. The Emily Couric Public Service Award honors an individual or
organization that in its public role exemplifies the dedication to others
as seen in the life and work of Emily Couric. The Sloan's children, Kathy,
Brian and Holly, attended the celebrity gala to help raise awareness of the
4th leading cause of cancer death. PanCAN is the first, national
patient-based advocacy organization for the pancreatic cancer community,
including patients, families, medical researchers and physicians.
Though Bobbye Sloan passed away earlier this year as a result of pancreatic
cancer, she was a tireless advocate for cancer awareness. After being
diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997, she made it a goal to educate women
about the vital importance of early detection and appeared on "Oprah," ESPN
and NBC. Since Bobbye's death, her children have followed in her footsteps.
They are activists for cancer victims and their families and helped
organize fundraising at the Jazz season opener at the beginning of November
in support of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. Thanks to their efforts
and the generosity of the fans, PanCAN received $5,000.
"Bobbye Sloan and the entire Sloan family have selflessly reached out to
the public to share information and knowledge that leads to increased
health awareness," said Julie Fleshman, president and CEO of PanCAN. "In
her commitment and leadership, Bobbye was unwavering in getting her message
out. She truly exemplifies the spirit of Emily Couric."
Emily Couric, former Virginia State Senator for the 25th district, died on
October 18, 2001 of pancreatic cancer. As a lasting tribute to Emily
Couric's commitment, selfless dedication and great vision for a better,
safer, and healthier world, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network named the
Emily Couric Public Service Award in her honor.
