MDM Group, Inc. advises that the Company has appointed Dr. Edward L. Stephen, DVM, (LTC, US Army Reserves assigned to USAMRIID, Ft. Detrick) to head up the Company's bioterrorism and biological warfare defense division.

Dr. Stephen's direct experience in biodefense stems from over a decade with the US Army Special Operations Division and US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, MD, where he played key roles in bioterrorism defense including vulnerability assessments of targets such as the New York subway system, Pentagon, and elements of the food chain such as feedlots and stock yards. Dr. Stephen held leadership positions in drug discovery and development programs pertaining to agents of biological warfare and terrorism potential, including work conducted with Class A agents, those considered highest priority, as well as agents in Categories B and C.

As a facet of establishing collaborative research projects with the ISTC, Dr. Stephen was responsible for creating collaborative research projects with U.S. agencies, companies of all sizes, and universities. A predominant focus in this work was biodefense research and development including an important joint discovery project to find new drugs for the prevention and treatment of smallpox.

Dr. Stephen has also managed several civilian pharmaceutical development projects, including Battelle's Prime Contract to perform GLP toxicology studies in support of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He is the author of over fifty publications in technical, peer-reviewed journals and has presented at numerous national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Stephen has been a member of several veterinary societies and associations, in addition to New York Academy of Sciences, Regulatory Affairs Professional Society, American Chemical Society, and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

In his role with MDM, Dr. Stephen's initial task will be to establish the inaugural direction of MDM's biodefense division and to select and initiate its first collaborative projects.
