Bioterrorism Expert, Dr. Edward L. Stephen, Appointed to Lead MDM Group Biodefense Division

MDM Group, Inc. advises that
the Company has appointed Dr. Edward L. Stephen, DVM, (LTC, US Army
Reserves assigned to USAMRIID, Ft. Detrick) to head up the Company's
bioterrorism and biological warfare defense division.
Dr. Stephen's direct experience in biodefense stems from over a decade with
the US Army Special Operations Division and US Army Medical Research
Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, MD, where he
played key roles in bioterrorism defense including vulnerability
assessments of targets such as the New York subway system, Pentagon, and
elements of the food chain such as feedlots and stock yards. Dr. Stephen
held leadership positions in drug discovery and development programs
pertaining to agents of biological warfare and terrorism potential,
including work conducted with Class A agents, those considered highest
priority, as well as agents in Categories B and C.
For the past five years, Dr. Stephen has been a Senior Project Manager at
the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC), a 37-nation
consortium creating peacetime opportunities that take advantage of the
scientific experience and expertise of personnel formerly involved in the
R&D of biological weapons of mass destruction (BioWMD) in Russia. As a
facet of establishing collaborative research projects with the ISTC, Dr.
Stephen was responsible for creating collaborative research projects with
U.S. agencies, companies of all sizes, and universities. A predominant
focus in this work was biodefense research and development including an
important joint discovery project to find new drugs for the prevention and
treatment of smallpox.
Dr. Stephen has also managed several civilian pharmaceutical development
projects, including Battelle's Prime Contract to perform GLP toxicology
studies in support of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He is the author
of over fifty publications in technical, peer-reviewed journals and has
presented at numerous national and international scientific meetings. Dr.
Stephen has been a member of several veterinary societies and associations,
in addition to New York Academy of Sciences, Regulatory Affairs
Professional Society, American Chemical Society, and International Union of
Pure and Applied Chemistry.
In his role with MDM, Dr. Stephen's initial task will be to establish the
inaugural direction of MDM's biodefense division and to select and initiate
its first collaborative projects.
