V5Mail Inc., has announced V5Mail, a Web-based electronic mail service that lets its users set a price that senders must pay to send them electronic messages. By charging for receiving messages, users can properly recoup costs associated with receiving, processing and responding to e-mail.
"V5Mail is an exciting new tool for Internet users who want to charge for e-mail-based services," said Carlos Candeloro, president of V5Mail Inc. "It also solves the costly problem of spam."
One reason unsolicited commercial e-mail, or "spam," is so rampant is that it costs practically nothing to send. With V5Mail, every incoming message earns the recipient a fee. This fee must be paid by the sender before the message is sent. Because unpaid messages are not sent, V5Mail eliminates spam and other frivolous e-mail.
V5Mail also offers its users a more secure way to communicate online. More information is available at www.v5mail.com/secure_advantage.ppt. Unlike regular e-mail, which is transmitted as plain text across the Internet, the V5Mail system uses the industry standard HTTPS protocol to transparently encrypt all incoming and outgoing messages.
"Traditional e-mail is inherently insecure," said Mike Wooldridge, V5Mail co-founder and company director. "In contrast, V5Mail safeguards every message sent through its system. Protecting your important online communications is as easy as signing up for a V5Mail account."
The service (beta) launched at the beginning of October 2004. Signing-up for a V5Mail mailbox costs $79.95 a year.
To use V5Mail, users may sign up for a mailbox at the V5Mail Web site https://www.v5mail.com. At signup, users can set their price for receiving a V5Mail message. When a V5Mail message is sent, funds are transferred from the sender's account to the receiver's account. V5Mail charges a nominal fee of $0.05 for each message received.
The balance in a user's account increases or decreases with each message received or sent. Users can request the return of excess funds accumulated in their accounts.
It is not necessary to obtain a V5Mail mailbox to use the V5Mail service. Anyone can send a message to a V5Mail user by visiting V5Mail.com and charging the fees to a credit card. V5Mail is also backward compatible with the regular e-mail system. It permits V5Mail account holders to send messages not only within the V5Mail system but also to regular e-mail addresses outside V5Mail.
