Caspian Networks, CacheLogic and Shenick Partner to Transform Peer-to-Peer Traffic Identification & Control in Service Provider Networks

Vendors' Combined Approach Is the First to Quantify, Identify and Control P2P Traffic at the High Speeds Required by Service Providers

Caspian Networks Inc., CacheLogic Limited and Shenick Network Systems Limited have partnered to offer service providers the most efficient and scalable way to cope with the increase in peer-to-peer (P2P) filesharing traffic. By managing P2P traffic on existing network infrastructures, the combined solution allows carriers to exactly quantify the amount of P2P traffic on their networks, manage it and measure the results to achieve new levels of revenue generation and cost savings without impacting end-users.

The continued growth in the sharing of movies, videos and software traffic using P2P protocols is causing congestion in service provider peering gateways and other network areas. Existing routers are ineffective at controlling this traffic, as P2P applications have evolved to masquerade as other applications. Appliances dedicated to analyzing P2P traffic have been challenged to control the traffic in real-time at the interface speeds required by service providers.

Caspian's flow-state aggregation router identifies and controls peer-to-peer traffic, allowing service providers to accommodate more customers or new services on their existing network, lower network costs and provide a framework for future premium services. Caspian's flow-state technology identifies P2P traffic at Layer 3 by the characteristics of IP flows themselves. Long-lived P2P file transfers are distinguished from short-lived flows like web pages, and are policed or shaped as desired by the service provider. The solution works in conjunction with or as a replacement for existing routers and switches.

CacheLogic's Cacheswitch(TM) and Cachepliance(TM) products use a combination of Layer 7 deep packet inspection and caching to help service providers understand their network traffic and control its usage. CacheLogic's caching solutions help service providers offload P2P traffic from their networks while maintaining subscriber satisfaction. Implemented together, Caspian and CacheLogic's innovative solutions combine the benefits of Caspian's flow state intelligence and scalability at Layer 3 with the accuracy and protocol intelligence offered by CacheLogic's Layer 7 inspection products. This combination allows resolute P2P traffic identification, and a combination of shaping and caching at full 10 Gbps line rate to enable dramatic transit and last mile costs savings. Shenick's diversifEye(TM) platform provides network and application emulation for measurement and quantification of P2P traffic. Shenick's device allows carriers to measure the effectiveness of the Caspian and CacheLogic platforms at controlling P2P traffic.

"Peer-to-peer traffic is here to stay -- and while others talk about it, only the combined technologies represented by this partnership allow service providers to fully measure and control it," said Brad Wurtz, CEO of Caspian Networks. "Shenick's diversifEye(TM) test system allows service providers to easily understand the before-and-after effects of Caspian's and CacheLogic's platforms, and their potential for new revenue and cost savings."
