eDiets.com(R) Launches Trim Kids(TM) Plan
Childhood Nutrition Experts Partner With Online Diet Leader to Offer Personalized Plan

eDiets.com, Inc. , a
leading online diet and healthy living destination, today announced that a
personalized online version of Trim Kids, the first scientifically
supported and clinically proven weight management plan for parents of
overweight children ages 5-17, is exclusively available through the
company's award-winning Web site at www.eDiets.com. The launch of the Trim
Kids plan marks the 20th personalized online weight management program
offered exclusively by eDiets.com.
Originally developed by Melinda Sothern, Ph.D, M.Ed., C.E.P., T. Kristian
von Almen, Ph.D and Heidi Schumacher, R.D., L.D.N., C.D.E., and now
optimized with online personalization by eDiets.com, the Trim Kids plan
addresses the nutritional, physical and emotional essentials for safe and
effective child weight management. eDiets.com enables parents to
custom-tailor the Trim Kids plan for each child through a convenient and
secure online format and to interact with its staff of nutrition, fitness
and psychology experts, and other parents of obese and overweight children.
"Overweight conditions during childhood are the most prevalent nutritional
problems facing families in the United States," said Dr. Melinda Sothern,
co-author of Trim Kids. "Overweight youth are at increased risk of
developing numerous health problems, medical and otherwise, including low
self-esteem, depression, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, asthma, and
Type II Diabetes, among others. With the Trim Kids plan at eDiets.com,
parents finally have easy online access to personalized tools for breaking
the vicious circle of childhood weight problems and avoiding these serious,
yet preventable, conditions."
The Trim Kids plan at eDiets.com helps parents learn how to help their kids
practice healthier habits week by week using straightforward and practical
techniques that are fun, low-pressure, and proven to be effective with kids
over the long term. Parents register their child for the program online
after being reminded to consult with their child's pediatrician or family
physician before beginning any new weight management or exercise program.
During the registration process, the child's Body Mass Index (BMI) is
calculated and compared to pediatric growth charts characterized by age and
gender to determine the child's risk level. Parents then receive an
appropriate weight management plan specific to their child's unique needs
that includes a custom-tailored weekly meal plan, recipes and itemized
grocery shopping list. A wide array of young child and adolescent
health-specific informational and educational resources are also available,
in addition to comprehensive community support. The parent will log on to
reassess the child's progress each week, and the customized program will be
automatically adjusted as needed.
"The authors of Trim Kids, Melinda Sothern, T. Kristian von Almen and Heidi
Schumacher, are renowned for their expertise in the field of children's
health, and we're gratified to have aligned with them to build this
structured online program to improve the dietary health and physical
fitness of America's youth," said David Humble, CEO of eDiets.com. "The
need for such a resource is clear, considering that, according to the
National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 15 percent of children
today ages 6 to 19 are overweight and another 15 percent are at risk of
becoming overweight. It's also now known that twice as many children are
overweight today as compared to two decades ago, and that 80 percent of
overweight children and adolescents will become overweight adults."
Humble continued, "We believe that children require a unique and highly
customized approach to weight loss and weight management versus that for
adults, and children whose parents support their efforts to change
lifestyles and behaviors are more likely to lose weight, and maintain a
healthy weight and lifestyle over the long term."
The eDiets.com Trim Kids Plan consists of two parts:
Part One: Setting the Stage for Success: The Trim Kids plan at eDiets.com
offers parents a three-pronged approach to understanding and combating
their child's weight problem through text, real-life stories, quizzes and
charts geared to the following focal points:
-- Improved nutritional and eating regimen;
-- Increased daily physical activity; and
-- Gradual behavior modification.
Part Two: The Trim Kids plan at eDiets.com: The interactive components of
the 12-week program include:
-- Time to Stop and Think: Sets the tone for the main points of the week
and provides helpful tips;
-- Time to Get Active: Details "kid-specific" exercises and activities
appropriate for their age and weight level;
-- Time to Dine: Contains essential nutrition know-how, menu plans,
shopping lists and recipes; and
-- Time to Sum Up: Helps parents and kids evaluate the week's progress,
problem-solve setbacks and set goals for the next week.
