Power Of We Consulting Discusses Five Critical Workplace Problems And How To Solve Them

Recent problems with jobs and employment have brought a renewed focus on business and the workplace. According to the Conference Board, job satisfaction has declined since 1995 (currently less than 49 percent). A survey by Integra Realty Resources showed that 42 percent of employees have experienced yelling and verbal abuse. According to Steven H. Carney, a workplace expert from Power of We Consulting who has been interviewed on radio stations across the United States, almost 80 percent of employees think teamwork needs to be increased. These surveys represent tens of millions of employees who are suffering from workplace problems. According to Carney, here are five critical workplace problems and how to solve them:

1. A competitive workplace. This approach breeds back-stabbing, scapegoating, and one-upsmanship, especially in the insecure job environment of today. To excel, employees and team members need to be on the same side, on the same team. Managers and employees need to use a more cooperative teamwork approach to really excel.

2. An "us and them" culture. This old-fashioned approach divides managers and workers on the basis of hierarchy and power, where managers often use an authoritarian approach at the expense of morale and performance. Managers and owners should focus on leadership skills: inspiration, using teamwork principles (communication, collaboration, recognition, and cohesion), being a team player, empowering employees, and being accountable.

3. Unsolved gripes and conflicts. Too often, managers dismiss gripes and conflicts as unimportant - to be dealt with later. Unsolved gripes and conflicts will simmer and eventually explode. Trust will falter, and managers and workers won't work together effectively. Everyone in the workplace needs to solve gripes and problems or they will grow from stones into boulders, blocking the road to success.

4. High turnover. Many companies think it's normal because they have grown used to a dysfunctional workplace. Problems with verbal abuse, high stress, and low job satisfaction all reflect faltering teamwork. To decrease turnover, every team and organization needs a mission statement to focus on, and everyone needs to follow teamwork principles and the we identity. Managers and owners must show leadership by treating employees well, focusing on excellence, and rewarding their teams' performances.

5. Frustrated customers. The above problems adversely affect customer service and satisfaction, and many customers are frustrated with the disservice they receive: the endless phone menus, the arguments when they finally reach someone, the sizzle without the steak, or the loss of relationships when employees quit. Companies need to remember this timeless truth: Clients and customers are the ultimate bosses. For any company or organization to have long-term success, it must have a relentless commitment to meeting or exceeding the needs and expectations of its clients and customers.
