Westell DSL Modems Selected for Use at Athens 2004 Olympic Games
Broadband Devices Play a Key Role in Transmitting News and Event Results

Westell Technologies, Inc., , a
leading provider of broadband/DSL access products, gateways and
conferencing services, announced today that the Company's broadband DSL
modems will be used by the media at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games.
Associated Press, the international news distribution service, purchased
Westell's modems for its use at the Main Press Center (MPC), the principal
media facility for representatives of the international written and
photographic press. The MPC opened on June 13, and operates on a 24-hour
basis until the Games conclusion. The MPC is among the Olympic venues
with the longest continuous periods of operation.
"This marks the second consecutive Olympic Games that Associated Press has
selected Westell modems to help with its news distribution services", said
Anthony Kelly, Purchasing for Special Events for Associated Press in New
Jersey. "We were so satisfied with the quality of performance at the Salt
Lake City Winter Games, we knew we could rely on them again for the even
more demanding venues at the Athens 2004 Games," he added.
There are 28 sports being contested in Athens at a variety of venue
locations. Westell modems will be used in a point-to-point, wide area
configuration, all networked back to the MPC. Similar to the spokes and
center hub of a wheel. Each connection at a venue has a Westell modem
linked to a DSLAM in addition to the same equipment set-up at the MPC. At
the MPC, AP then sends news and event results out to the world.
Despite the varying global telecommunications standards and signaling
methods, Westell's modems were easily configured to accommodate the variety
of international vendors' equipment used in the network.
Westell VP Marketing Gordon Reichard Jr. said, "It is a real honor to be
able to contribute to such a prestigious world event like the Olympics.
When you think that of all the modem manufacturers available, Westell's
modems were selected for this critical application, it is a tribute to our
entire organization."
