Worldwide Fixed WiMAX Subscribers to Surpass 7 Million in 2009
By the end of 2009, there will be more than 7
million subscribers worldwide using broadband wireless services based on
802.16REVd technology, the fixed flavor of WiMAX, according to Untethering
Broadband: WiMAX, 802.20, and Others, a new report from Parks Associates.
On June 24, 2004, the IEEE approved 802.16REVd as IEEE 802.16-2004, and the
final edited standard will be published in late July. The new standard
should encourage further development and innovation in fixed broadband
wireless solutions, according to Parks Associates.
"This standard is exciting news for the industry," said Yuanzhe (Michael)
Cai, senior analyst at Parks Associates. "However, interoperability test
and certification process both take time and on average carriers spend 6
months trialing new equipment, and therefore the market is unlikely to see
volume commercial deployment until 2006.
"Residential market deployments of 802.16 REVd are likely to occur first in
Europe and Asia, with Latin America and North America following their lead.
Most of the deployments in the developed world will be in the underserved
markets, fueled by government mandates on wide broadband availability, and
developing countries with poor wireline network infrastructure will use
802.16REVd for both voice and data."
Untethering Broadband: WiMAX, 802.20, and Others examines the
next-generation broadband wireless standards and technologies, including
WiMAX, 802.20, 3GPP, and proprietary technologies. It profiles the major
technology and solution providers, provides consumer perspectives on mobile
broadband wireless solutions, identifies potential markets and service
providers, and forecasts industry growth for 802.16REVd, 802.16e, 802.20,
and other broadband wireless products.
