IntruGuard Devices Partners With QualCore Logic's Design Realization Team for Implementation of Network Denial of Service ASICs

18 Million Equivalent Gates Implemented, Tested, Prototyped in Xilinx(R) FPGAs by QualCore Logic's Team

IntruGuard Devices today said it partnered with QualCore Logic's Design Realization Team to implement IntruGuard's patent-pending design for the recently announced IG2000 rate-based Denial of Service (DoS) appliance.

The IG2000 protects critical network systems and services such as email servers, websites, ecommerce, and databases from being overwhelmed with network traffic generated during DoS attacks like MyDoom, Blaster, Code Red and Witty worms. At the heart of the IG2000 are two Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) consisting of 18-million equivalent application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) gates.

QualCore Logic, an intellectual property (IP) and full-service, mixed-signal application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) realization company, implemented the IG2000's two high-performance Xilinx Virtex II chips, starting with micro-architecture specification and register transfer level (RTL) code development. QualCore Logic created complex testbenches and validated the design to ensure working prototypes, both of which worked on the first pass. Twelve functional modules were produced for the IG2000 relating to high-speed packet classification and rate-based intrusion prevention. The QualCore Logic team started the project in March 2003 and the first version was completed in April 2004.

The IG2000 prevents Zero Day Denial of Service attacks by continuously monitoring all relevant layer 2, layer 3 and layer 4 parameters. Using Continuous Learning and Microfine Granularity(TM), the IG2000 automatically adjusts and monitors thousands of parameters at full Gigabit Ethernet line rate to protect valuable network systems and services.

"True DoS protection at gigabit rates can only be implemented in hardware," says Hemant Jain, chief technology officer (CTO) and co-founder of IntruGuard Devices. "We needed an experienced partner who could work with us to get our complex design into silicon. The QualCore team's enthusiasm, extraordinary efficiency and genuine commitment contributed to extremely fast time to market. They worked in startup mode with us from the outset."

Completing this partnership with IntuGuard Devices, QualCore Logic now adds intrusion prevention and network security to its diverse list of silicon realization applications. QualCore's engineering team has produced more than 400 FPGAs and taped out more than 100 ASICs for multiple commercial, networking, and security applications in which they have continuously refined process workflow and methodologies.

Mahendra Jain, chief executive officer (CEO) of QualCore Logic, remarks: "Our goal is to work as closely as possible with each partner to ensure their success. We are proud that we met IntruGuard's challenge for feature rich and high-performance chips."
