23 : 4 January 2008: RealVNC's Virtual Network Computing (VNC) technology has been used to control and maintain a network of remote cameras in sub zero temperatures on the shores of Hudson Bay in Canada to track the movement and behaviour of Polar Bears. The digital system was set up by SeeMore Wildlife Systems that specializes in remote wildlife monitoring solutions, to help Polar Bears International researchers from the University of Florida to film the dwindling number of polar bears as they prepared to head off to the Arctic for the winter. The project comprised an IP-based network system of digital microwave links to transmit images across the tundra from Cape Churchill cameras to the remote town of Churchill, which was in turn connected to the control centre in Alaska via the Internet. The work also involved a hi-tech Tundra Buggy that fed live Polar Bear Cam streaming video through a 45MB wireless link to the town of Churchill and then to the National Geographic website via the Internet.'As the cameras were unmanned and powered by methanol fuel cells, it would have been virtually impossible to keep the system running without using VNC,' said Emmy Award winning wildlife filmmaker Daniel Zatz of SeeMore Wildlife Systems. 'VNC provided full control and monitoring of the camera network and remote PC server in Churchill from the relative warmth and luxury of project HQ in Alaska.' One of the benefits of the RealVNC solution is that it works with virtually any platform or operating system across any network, using just a simple downloadable interface or through a browser. This meant that Zatz and his team could log in, manage the network and download images directly from a PC, Mac or even handheld device. While this exciting application of VNC was in unusually extreme conditions, the technology is also used by millions of users worldwide for a range of applications from remote access and home working to remote maintenance and training, helpdesks and business collaboration. VNC can be up and running in seconds, takes up just a few MBs of disk and RAM and supports more operating systems than any other remote access system, including Windows 95, 98, 2K, ME, NT4, XP, Vista, Mac OSX, Linux, Solaris, HPUX, Java and WinCE. The VNC software also automatically configures itself to provide best performance for LAN, WAN, Cable/ADSL or dialup connection speeds. The project in Hudson Bay was part of a larger effort led by Polar Bears International (polarbearsinternational.org) to increase awareness about polar bears. 'It is important to raise awareness of climate change and inspire people to care more about this increasingly endangered species,' says Zatz. 'VNC technology has certainly played an important role in helping to draw attention to these beautiful animals.'About SeeMore WildLife Systems Founded by Daniel Zatz, a four-time Emmy Award winning wildlife filmmaker, SeeMore Wildlife Systems has grown into the leading technology player in its field. The company has installed hundreds of cameras across several continents over the last six years and has more experience in self-contained remote wildlife viewing systems than any other organization. For more information visit www.seemorewildlife.com About Polar Bears InternationalPolar Bears International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the worldwide conservation of the polar bear. 20 : Samsung Mobile on the run with support from Joe Cole, patron of the Cystic Fibrosis TrustSamsung Mobile today announced that it will be supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust through a number of fund raising activities throughout 2008. The campaign, championed by Mark Mitchinson, VP of Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland, began this month with a Samsung four mile run on the 4th January. The event was attended by Joe Cole, patron of the Trust and Chelsea Football Club player, along with employees from Samsung Mobile and Samsung Electronics. Taking time out from his hectic training schedule Joe gave Mark and fellow marathon runner Paul Roberts (himself a sufferer of Cystic Fibrosis) some top hints and tips for training success. The first in a series of fundraising events, the run will be followed by a celebrity Samsung product gala dinner and charity auction, blog, and Battersea Park Fun Run, all in advance of Mark Mitchinson's ultimate commitment - running the Flora London Marathon on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.Cystic Fibrosis is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease and it affects over young 8,000 people in the UK. Over two million people in the UK carry the faulty gene that causes Cystic Fibrosis - around one in 25 of the population. If two carriers have a child, the baby has a one in four chance of having Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick sticky mucus. This makes it hard to breathe and digest food. Mark Mitchinson, VP of Samsung Mobile, said: 'I chose the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as my 2008 charity because of my colleague and friend General Manager of Service, Richard McGowan. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, I told him I wanted to do what I could to help in terms of fundraising. Typically, rather than think of himself, he asked if we would consider supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as his 11 year-old daughter suffers from the disease. Richard's courage and selflessness has not only inspired me to train for the London Marathon again, but to make sure as many people as possible are aware of my fundraising efforts and such a debilitating disease, through this website. Mitchinson continued 'In order to succeed in the marathon, I have been training with a very special coach - we'll reveal more about my training in due course.' Commenting on the commitment from Samsung, Sarah Guthrie, Director of Fundraising, Cystic Fibrosis Trust said: 'I cannot overemphasise the importance of initiatives such as Mark's to the running of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. We are continually looking to develop long-term corporate relationships and Samsung is a great brand to have on board. We are very much looking forward to working with Samsung Mobile and our patron Joe Cole throughout the year to achieve incredible results!'For more information on Mark's training, or to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, please log on to www.marathomnmitch.com. Notes to editorsAbout the Cystic Fibrosis Trust: The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK's only national charity dealing with all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis (CF). It funds research to treat and cure CF and aims to ensure appropriate clinical care and support for people with Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the UK's most common life-threatening inherited disease. Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a single defective gene. As a result, the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, become clogged with thick sticky mucus resulting in chronic infections and inflammation in the lungs and difficulty digesting food. Each week five babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis and three young people die - 90% from lung damage. Average life expectancy is just 31, although improvements in treatments mean a baby born today is expected to live longer. Further information can be found on our website www.cftrust.org.uk. Help and advice for those affected by Cystic Fibrosis is available through our Helpline on 0845 859 1000. For further information, media should contact Gemma Foy on 0208 290 7912 or email gfoy@cftrust.org.ukAbout Samsung:Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is a global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies with 2007 consolidated sales of US$103.4 billion. 19 : Only half (52%) of consumers in Great Britain trust their high street bank or building society to protect their personal details from identity thieves, a new 'trust' poll has revealed.Travel and gambling companies fared even worse by coming bottom of the league in a survey by YouGov for identity fraud prevention specialists GB.The research also suggests that consumers will vote with their feet unless organisations tighten up their online fraud safeguards - just under half (45%) of those polled are prepared to give up online banking and shopping to avoid becoming a victim of identity fraud. The poll also highlights the dramatic gulf in trust between younger and older generations - 21% of 18-24 year olds trust mobile phone companies with their details compared with just 5% of over 55 year olds. The survey comes hot on the heels of MPs calling for an identity fraud tsar to be appointed to tackle the estimated £1.7 billion annual cost to the economy.According to GB, this latest research provides a wake up call to businesses - proving they're capable of protecting their customers against identity fraud is essential for future growth. Rob Laurence, managing director of GB's fraud prevention business, said: 'Identity fraud is a major issue for consumers and it's clear companies need to do much more to win their trust. 'The majority of adults in the UK have a bank or building society account, yet just half actually trust those organisations with their personal information. Well over 45 million people in the UK have a mobile phone, but less than one in ten of those polled trust their mobile company with their details.'We have to ask ourselves why this is. Information security has been high on the agenda for over 4 years now - why do consumers still feel businesses do not do enough to stop fraudsters from getting hold of their personal information?'Our research reveals that consumers are ultimately prepared to give up online banking and shopping to prevent identity fraudsters from getting hold of their data. As it is widely accepted that online fraud will continue to rise and fast, failure to protect could have dramatic consequences for business growth.'GB, which helps hundreds of organisations in the UK to prevent fraud, is calling for businesses to respond to consumer pressure on identity fraud protection. Mr Laurence continued: 'Essentially, businesses need to tackle identity fraud with the same vigour as they are already doing with environmental issues. If they don't, then it's highly likely that consumers will form pressure groups to get their voices heard. 'Demonstrating clearly to consumers the attention that is being paid to safeguarding them against identity fraud will go a long way in restoring faith.' YouGov ID fraud 'trust' survey - key statistics: Less than half (46%) of consumers feel there is enough information available to help protect themselves against identity fraud An overwhelming majority - 72% - feel that the organisations holding their personal details are ultimately responsible for protecting their identity 52% of consumers say they trust their bank/building society to look after their details, while just 25% say they trust the Government with their personal details Almost half (49%) of women in Great Britain would be prepared to give up online banking and e-shopping to reduce the risks of ID fraud.
