Arts Express In Darkness: Surviving The Sewers of Nazi-Occupied Poland

This Is Where We Take Our Stand: Director David Zeiger and war-damaged Iraq vet and anti-military movement leader Geoff Millard talk the politics of war movies; the 2008 Winter Soldier hearings; medicated soldiers sent back into combat; the dirty truth about child solders in the US military; so-called ‘peace nazis’; the emerging alliance of Veterans Against The War and Occupy Wall Street; and Rambo, The Deer Hunter, and the military suicide epidemic. And why ‘This Is Where We Take Our Stand is a film that needs to be in the world.’

In Darkness: Filmmaker Agnieszka Holland delves into her fact based 2012 Oscar nominated drama about Jews hiding in sewers under the Polish city of Lvov in nazi-occupied Poland and the laborer who secretly helped them survive, though not without initial misgivings. Holland also reflects on the Hollywoodization of the Holocaust; her own confusion of identity as the Polish offspring of a Catholic mother and Jewish father; the impact of Occupy Warsaw; and confessing to not quite understanding her own characters in the film, and by extension the mysteries of the human soul.
