Why I Love Men Book Review

“Today’s dating environment is extremely competitive. The odds are much better for men because they are outnumbered by women in every state… For black women, it is even more challenging. In our nation, there are ten single black women for every seven single black men, and over 70% of black women are single. Is your goal just to meet new men so you can have fun dating, or are you interested in a long-term committed relationship? Either way, this book is for you.

Why did I write this book? Basically, because I love men. I find men to be attractive and fascinating… I enjoy the process of dating and the excitement, anticipation, anxiety, and newness of meeting new men… I’ve been proposed to three times, engaged twice, and married once… This book shares my experiences, various philosophies and some of the best practical advice…

After reading this book, you will have a competitive advantage over other women… By following the strategies in this book, you will definitely increase your chances of finding a husband.”

Excerpted from the Introduction (pages xi-xv)

We’ve recently witnessed an explosion of African-American oriented relationship advice books, ranging from such best sellers as Steve Harvey’s “Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man” and Omarosa’ “The Bitch Switch” to tomes with catchy titles like “Men Don’t Heal, We Ho,” “Marriage 101,” and “The Love Ethic.” I suppose there must be a big demand for such material in the black community, given the low marriage and high divorce rates, and the unfortunate state of the family unit.

The latest contribution to the genre offering some solutions was written by Jennifer “J.J.” Smith, who did some post-graduate work at the Wharton Business School after earning a degree in Math from Hampton University. How that background qualifies Smith to publish an opus about dating dos and don’ts is beyond me, but I will admit that I’ve encountered other authors with far less impressive credentials hanging out a shingle as a love guru.

Why I Love Men: The Joys of Dating is Jennifer’s first opus, although this prolific romance pundit has already published another half-dozen e-books on related topics, including “200+ Online Dating Sites,” “101 Best Places to Meet Men,” and “40 Is the New 30.” The ambitious product line extension certainly says something about Ms. Smith’s business savvy if not about her ability to help socially-challenged sisters. Why not share everything in one text, instead of asking folks to purchase more and more installments?

All of the above notwithstanding, I’ll admit to finding Why I Love Men well-written, engaging and thoroughly entertaining. It is essentially a raw, revealing, warts-and-all memoir about the author’s own dating nightmares which eventually gets around to doling out some sensible advice to single females about how to avoid making the same mistakes.

War stories and strategic military maneuvers from a time-tested veteran of the black battle of the sexes.
